"NBC Cashing in Online with SNL’s Popular Palin Skits"
• Tina fey performs an amazing, dead on impression of Sarah Palin
• only a small percentage, 1/3 of the audience that viewed these skits have done so life on SNL
• the rest have watched the skits online, and some view them later through PVR or time shifting
• Integrated Media Measurement Inc, a research firm that has been measuring the views says that we wouldn’t have seen viral activity like this a year ago, they expect to see a large change to come in consumer behaviour, where they are looking to the internet for video
• on the opening night of the skit, NBC had a good-sized primetime audience, yet since then the skits have been recorded and viewed later and been viewed and passed-along all over the internet- it is so popular that NBC is having a difficult time tracking all of the numbers
• NBC recently created “widget” technology which allows video material to be exposed over the internet while still having a tie to the network’s website
• Tina Fey’s skits are posted on NBC’s website shortly after they air so fans can see them online before they even air on TV
• the objective behind this was to create buzz, the network felt that if viewers enjoyed the clip and passed it along, then they may also tune into the Saturday Night Live TV program, where the skits are performed live on a more regular basis
• there was some risk involved in this project, if less people watched the show on Saturday night, advertising revenues would be lost- yet, the opposite has happened, the shows audience for its first few episodes were actually significantly higher than last years
